Coldplay Vancouver 2012

Saturday night in Vancouver can yield more than one entertainer and event to choose from, my last Saturday was won by the talented musicians from Coldplay.  Working in the entertainment industry I have come to realize there are two types of shows, a big budget experience show and an entertainer-focused, no-gimmick show. I usually lean towards a smaller more intimate experience show that has quality sound, seating and atmosphere with a performer that is there to entertain. But it seems to me that big budget shows with little door gifts and flashing hypnotic lights tend to bring in an immense audience.

Why is this? Are people more entertained by a big budget concert experience than they are with quality vocals and on-stage presents? (more…)

the beach boys reunion

After reuniting on the Grammys in February, the Beach Boys kicked off their 37-date tour at the Anselmo Valencia Amphitheatre in Tuscon, AZ last night. Not only does this tour mark the Beach Boys’ 50th anniversary but it is the first time that Brian Wilson has played with the band since 1996. During the 2.5 hour, 42-song set, the Beach Boys sang such hits as “Surfin’ Safari”, “Wouldn’t It Be Nice” and “California Girls.”

Levon Helm of The Band passes away from cancer

Thursday, April 19th, 2012

By Kat

It’s a sad day for music as Levon Helm – singer and drummer for The Band – passed away today at age 71 after a long battle with throat cancer.

From Rolling Stone (read the full feature):

“He passed away peacefully at 1:30 this afternoon surrounded by his friends and bandmates,” Helm’s longtime guitarist Larry Campbell tells Rolling Stone. “All his friends were there, and it seemed like Levon was waiting for them. Ten minutes after they left we sat there and he just faded away. He did it with dignity. It was even two days ago they thought it would happen within hours, but he held on. It seems like he was Levon up to the end, doing it the way he wanted to do it. He loved us, we loved him.”

Tupac Live – sort of – at Coachella 2012

Tuesday, April 17th, 2012

By Kat

It’s been all the talk surrounding the Coachella Music Festival down in Indio, California, but in case you missed it rap legend Tupac Shakur returned to the stage last weekend. Apparently being dead still isn’t enough to keep him down.

The reanimation reportedly cost well over $100,000 to produce and even has its own Twitter account. There’s even the possibility that Tupac 2.0 will accompany Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg on tour.

Changes to the venerable Coachella festival this year included expanding the event to two weekends rather than one. Music fans who missed out last weekend – or wanting to come back for more – get another chance this weekend to see their favorite acts live on stage.
