Alan Gilbert, best known for his work as music director of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra since 2009, is an American violinist and conductor from New York City. Both his mother and father played as violinists in the New York Philharmonic, so a career with the orchestra was a natural fit for him.

As music director of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, Gilbert conducts pieces, chooses music, and makes hiring and firing decisions. He is responsible in large part for the success or failure of the orchestra, and if audience reaction has been anything to go by, he's been doing his job very well.
