Simon & Garfunkel Continued:

Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel grew up in Kew Gardens, Queens, New York City. Their singing careers began in various doo-wop groups in the early 50's. The duo copyrighted their first composition "The Girl For Me", in 1955.

When they signed their first record deal, Simon & Garfunkel adopted the stage name Tom & Jerry. Their first major hit "Hey, Schoolgirl", charted on the Billboard Charts at number 57.

When they failed to make a major dent on the 1950's music scene, Simon and Garfunkel went their separate ways. Art went to college, Simon worked as a songwriter, musician and producer.

They re-united several years later under the familiar moniker of 'Simon & Garfunkel'. After contributing several songs to the soundtrack of the film Mrs. Robinson, the pair rocketed to fame. Over the course of 6 years (1964-1970), the pair expanded the genre of folk-rock into a serious art form. Influenced by the work of other folk-acts such as the Everly Brothers, Bob Dylan, Pete Seeger, Tom Paxton and Peter, Paul and Mary; Simon & Garfunkel redefined folk by incorporating complex rythms and dynamic harmonies.

The band had a string of hits including "Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M.", "The Sound Of Silence", "Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme", "Scarborough Fair/Canticle", "For Emily, Wherever I May Find Her", "The Big Bright Green Pleasure Machine" and the anthemic "Mrs. Robinson".
