Born in Augusta, Ga. in 1956, Sharon Jones is a soul funk singer, knows as the lead singer for the Dap Kings, formed from members of the former "Soul Providers." Enjoying only a local career early on, Jones has emerged internationally in mid-career. Her first release was "Switchblade," a solo track from a Roth/Lehman album.
The first release of Daptone Records was a full-length album featuring Jones. In 2002, they produced "Dap Dippin' with Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings," to immediate acclaim. Three more albums ensued. Her performance of Bogan's "That's What My Baby Likes" was featured in "The Great Debaters," and she took a small role in the film as well.
