With their greatest success coming in the '60s, Tommy James & The Shondells, an American rock & roll group, went through several versions of themselves, still managing two number ones in the U.S. - "Hanky Panky" in '66, "Crimson Clover" in '69. The band had twelve others in the top 40.
Originally "The Echoes," the group disbanded before a Pittsburgh radio station unearthed one of their singles and sold 80,000 black market copies. James needed to find band quickly, and discovered it in a Pittsburgh club on his way to the station. The Shondells toured into the â??80s, and came together for specific events afterward. Jame's song, "I'm Alive" became a hit overseas in 2011. The group had six gold records.
