Tampa Bay-Boston Game 6 Recap

Thursday, May 26th, 2011

The Tampa Bay Lightning managed to keep hold of their shot for the Stanley Cup when they tied the Eastern Conference last night 3-3. They managed to defeat the Boston Bruins 5-4 at home in St Pete Times Forum in Tampa, sending the teams back to Boston for Game 7.

First period went off with a bang just 36 seconds in as Teddy Purcell knocked it in with an assist from Vincent Lecavalier. The Bruins bounced back to take the lead, with goals from Milan Lucic and David Krejci.

Tampa Bay fought back in the second period, tying it up then jumping ahead with two goals. The first was with a backhanded goal by Martin St Louis. The second was a nice slap shot by Teddy Purcell.

They managed to continue the goal roll, when Steven Stamkos scored 34 seconds into the third. Boston stepped up as Krejci tipped one in. Less than a minute later St Louis got one with a wrist shot while the goalie was on the other side of the net. Boston tried to stay in it with another goal by Krejci. It was a great hat trick by Krejci, but it wasn’t enough.

Tampa Bay took the game 5-4.

This is the first time a Conference Final has gone to Game 7 since 2007. The first game of the Stanley Cup Final will take place in Vancouver June 1st at 5 pm PDT. The last game for the Eastern Conference Final takes place tomorrow Friday, May 27th at 5 pm PDT in Boston.

Tampa Bay Lightning tie it up against Boston Bruins

Monday, May 23rd, 2011

Game 4 of the Eastern Conference Finals made for an interesting game at St Pete Times Forum, where the Tampa Bay Lightning fought their way back against the Boston Bruin’s early 3-0 lead.

tampabaylightningThe first period saw a round of unassisted goals by the Bruins, with Patrice Bergeron neatly tucking the first goal into the left side of the net. Michael Ryder followed this up a few minutes later. Bergeron went for another as he scored while the Bruins were short handed.

During the second period the Lightning fought back, scoring three goals of their own. Despite a bit of a fumble, Teddy Purcell managed to get Tampa’s first goal with a backhand to the far side of the net. Just over a minute later he managed to do it again with a wrist shot. Sean Bergenheim tied it up, with a goal that now puts him in the lead for league playoff goals. This made it three goals for the Lightning within a span of four minutes, catching them up with the Bruins.

Simon Gagne put the Lightning ahead in the third period, and had the opportunity to score a second goal. Instead he sent the puck to Martin St Louis, who scored on an empty net after the Bruins had pulled their goalie.

The Tampa Bay Lightning won it 5-3.

The Eastern Conference Finals are now tied 2-2. Game 5 takes place tonight at Boston’s TD Garden. Puck drops at 8 pm EST.

Bruins shut down Lightning in Game 3

Friday, May 20th, 2011

If last night’s Boston Bruins at Tampa Bay Lightning game could be summed in two things it would be: Bergeron and goaltending.

51625520Compared to Game 2, Game 3 was much more edge of your seat thrill ride with both teams focusing more on strategy.

Patrice Bergeron‘s return to the game seemed to revive the Bruins’ confidence. Bergeron had missed two weeks due to a concussion he had received in a shoulder-to-head check from Claude Giroux during Round 2 against the Philadelphia Flyers.

Tim Thomas was again goalie extraordinaire as he shut out the Lightning – his second playoff career shutout. Despite even the hair-raising moments, Thomas shut out the 31 attempts on net.

Not to mention the fact that the Bruins dominated this game, with David Krejci putting one in the net just over a minute into the game. From there the Bruins controlled play at puck drop 67% of the time. Bergeron himself won 18 of 28 faceoffs.

That’s not to say the Lightning didn’t make a great effort; the Bruins simply amped up their game and didn’t make mistakes. The Lightning are surely going to come back fighting harder for Game 4.

This win puts the Bruins ahead 2-1 in the Eastern Conference Final. Next game takes place at 1:30 pm EST in Tampa.
