Stanley Cup Final Game 1 Recap

Thursday, June 2nd, 2011

59 minutes and 41 seconds were what it took to decide the outcome of Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final between the Vancouver Canucks and the Boston Bruins at Rogers Arena.

The first two periods saw a total of 12 power plays. Both Roberto Luongo and Tim Thomas were human shields, stopping a combined total of 46 shots through the first forty minutes.

It took an empty net for someone to score, and that’s exactly what Ryan Kesler, Jannik Hansen, and Raffi Torres did with 20 seconds left in the game. Just as fans were thinking the game was going to go into overtime, Kesler managed to grab a pass from Kevin Bieksa. Getting the puck in the zone he passed to Hansen. Torres had just come on in a late line change, getting ahead of Boston’s Johnny Boychuk, accepting the pass from Hansen and sliding it in. Thomas didn’t even see Torres coming; he was on the other side of the net covering Hansen.

Next game happens Saturday, June 4th at Rogers Arena. Puck drops at 5pm PDT!

Canucks and Sharks go into Game 5

Tuesday, May 24th, 2011

The Vancouver Canucks are hoping history doesn’t repeat as they go into Game 5 against the San Jose Sharks. Wins in Game 5 haven’t been their strength, and they’re going to need to play as though this is Game 7 if they want to end the Western Conference Final here.

Henrik Sedin insisted that tonight’s game will not be a relaxed one for the Canucks. They won’t be playing as if they still have three more chances to win this.”You have to treat [tonight] as the last game, and that’s what we need to do. For me, that’s killer instinct.”

Many are wondering if the Sharks have any bite left in them. The Sharks will already be low in enthusiasm as their captain Joe Thornton got a messed up shoulder in Game 4. Thornton insists he is feeling 100% and is ready to go for tonight’s game.

On the Canucks bench it looks as though injured defencemen Aaron Rome and Christian Ehrhoff will be staying out of the game.

Today also happens to be the 14th anniversary of the game that put the Canucks in the Stanley Cup Final the last time around. Coincidence?

Tickets are still available for Game 5 of the Western Conference Finals, which happens tonight here in Vancouver at Rogers Arena. Puck drops at 6 pm PDT.

Canucks vs Blackhawks Rivalry Continues

Saturday, the Vancouver Canucks return from a five game road trip to take on the defending Stanley Cup Champions, the Chicago Blackhawks. The Blackhawks kicked off their Western Road trip with a 5-0 win over the Edmonton Oilers and will be facing off against the Calgary Flames this evening.

The Blackhawks’ team that the Canucks will face on Saturday has experienced significant reshuffling since last year. Almost half their team were not on the roster for last year’s win. Salary cap limitations forced the loss of impact players such as big man Dustin Byfuglien, Ben Eager, and goal tender Antti Niemi. (more…)
