American-born prop comic, Gallagher (Leo Anthony Gallagher) was one of the most famous comics in the '80s. Honing his skills at The Comedy Store and The Ice House in California, he was refused a spot on The Tonight Show by Johnny Carson, who disliked prop comedy. Devotees among the staff prevailed, and Gallagher appeared.
Gallagher was popular for outlandish gadgetry, most of all the "Sledge-O-Matic," with which he crushed watermelons onstage, dousing the first three rows of his audience. He made sixteen comedy specials for the Showtime cable television network, which are in constant re-run.
