Cleveland Indians Continued
Since the team's inception, the Cleveland Indians have had multiple names. They've been called The Blues, The Bronchos and The Naps. The Cleveland Indians are named after star player Louis Sockalexis, the MLB's first Native American to play professional baseball. Originally named for the color of their uniforms, the Blues wanted a more aggressive name and adopted "The Bronchos" in 1902. A year later, the team switched to "The Naps" after second baseman and future manager Napolean Lajoie. They kept this name until 1915 when they switched to "The Indians". The 1920 season was marked by tragedy when shortstop Ray Chapman became the first MLB on-field fatality after being stuck in the head by a wild pitch thrown by Carl Mays.
After purchasing the team in 1946, owner Bill Veeck began to re-build the team roster. After extensive changes, the Indians went on to win the first pennant in 28 years and their second World Series Title.
In 1954 the Cleveland Indians had one of the MLB's best season records with 111 wins and only 43 losses. WIth their newfound respect came record Cleveland Indians ticket sales.
During the 1990's Cleveland won five strait division titles from 1995 to 1999. Throughout the decade, the Cleveland Indians advanced to the World Series twice (1995 and 1997) sadly losing both times to the Atlanta Braves and Florida Marlins.
