When founded in 1993, the Anaheim Ducks were owned by The Walt Disney Company and called the "Anaheim Mighty Ducks". The team's name was chosen from the Disney movie The Mighty Ducks, about a group of misfit teens who form an amateur hockey team. Disney subsequently made an animated series called The Mighty Ducks, featuring a fictional Mighty Ducks of Anaheim team that consists of anthropomorphized ducks.
In 1997, the Mighty Ducks made their first playoff appearance and defeated the Phoenix Coyotes in seven games in the Western Conference quarterfinals. However, they lost in the semifinals to the Detroit Red Wings. They returned to the playoffs in 1999, only to be swept by the Detroit Red Wings.
Their best playoff performance in franchise history was during the 2002-03 season which saw the Ducks come within one game of the Stanley Cup. They swept defending Stanley Cup champs the Detroit Red Wings, beat the Dallas Stars in six games in the quarterfinals, swept the Minnesota Wild in the Conference Finals, and finally fell to the New Jersey Devils in the Stanley Cup Finals in seven games. For his heroics which had kept Anaheim in the playoffs many times, goaltender Jean-Sebastien Giguere won the Conn Smythe Trophy as most-valuable-player of the playoffs.
On January 26, 2006, the team announced that it will shorten its name to Anaheim Ducks prior to the 2006-07 NHL season. The new team name also came with a new logo and team colours (black, gold and orange). The Anaheim Ducks kept Wild Wing as their mascot, however, to keep ties to the franchise's history.
The Anaheim Ducks made it to the Conference Finals in the 2005-06 season, but were stopped short by the Edmonton Oilers. This season, the Ducks are determined to make it to the Stanley Cup finals again and win for the first time.
