The Grammys: tribute, celebration, and controversy

The VIP clients we sent to the Grammy Awards must have had an amazing time (yes, we can get you tickets for next year’s ceremonies too – give us a call!). For the rest of us, though, watching from home was almost as good – we got to see a plethora of amazing outfits, see which of our predictions were right for the various award categories, and (of course) check out a series of outstanding live performances by some of the best artists in the business.

The death of Whitney Houston on Saturday cast a shadow over the proceedings, and was addressed in several moving tributes.

All was not gloom and doom, however – the red carpet was chock-full of artists looking great, and most charming moment of the evening had to go to Adele’s chipper pose with a literal armful of awards.

Nicki Minaj ruffled a few feathers with her date (an actor dressed as the Pope) and an exorcism-themed performance which some called sacrilegious. Check it out for yourself:

Celebrating the King of Pop – Cirque du Soleil's Michael Jackson: The Immortal World Tour

Few in the history of music put on a show and redefined popular music quite like Michael Jackson. Even after nearly three years since the King of Pop’s passing, his star still remains bright in the music world and in the hearts of his countless fans. Befitting of Jackson’s music and exhilarating stage presence, Cirque du Soleil’s “Michael Jackson: The Immortal World Tour” tribute to the pop icon is an extravaganza of music, costume and breathtaking acrobatic performances. Set to Jackson’s electrifying (albeit recorded) voice and hits such as “Smooth Criminal”, “Thriller”, “I Just Can’t Stop Loving You”, and “Bad”, the show is 22 scenes of Cirque magic that brings the singer’s work to life.
Thus far through the 2011 leg of the tour’s run, reviews have highlighted the production values and immaculate performances so iconic and expected from a Cirque du Soleil production. The most memorable scenes include a rendition of Jackson’s classic “Thriller”, complete with zombies and ghouls busting their moves. Michael’s iconic dance moves are on full masterful display to lively beats of “Smooth Criminal”, “Beat it” and “Jam”. Not just a rock concert, the show also highlights Cirque’s artistic flair in their tributes to Jackson’s messages of love and social justice.

Help our CEO raise money for sick kids!

It’s not often that we post about internal matters, but we figured the more people who hear about this, the better. Our CEO, Mario Livich, will be volunteering with the Variety Show of Hearts Telethon on Sunday (tomorrow, February 12) to raise money for children with special needs.
There will be fabulous performances by Michael Buble, Jennifer Hudson, Kelly Clarkson, Adele, and many more, and Mario (along with a ton of other fantastic volunteers) will be spending some time taking phone calls from viewers who’d like to donate. Please tune in – it will be some wonderfully entertaining TV, and if you’re able to make a donation, it would mean a lot to a group of very special kids.

Check out this great cover of Robyn’s “Call Your Girlfriend”

From Danish singer Christopher comes this live, acoustic version of pop diva Robyn’s Top 40 hit “Call Your Girlfriend.” We can’t get enough! Of course, the original song being so fantastic doesn’t hurt.

For reference, here’s the original.

Who do you think does the song better? Does Robyn’s synth-pop beat out the mellowness of Christopher’s version? Let us know in the comments below!

New track from Brandy and Monica leaked! Listen Here!

It’s been a while since their last collaboration (1998’s classic “The Boy is Mine”), but R&B singer-songwriters Monica and Brandy have reunited again. Their new song, “It All Belongs to Me,” was leaked a few days ago and we’ve got a copy, so take a listen.

The track takes cues from the past decade of R&B music (notably Beyonce’s solo work) while remaining entirely original. We particularly liked the bridge.

What are your thoughts? Is it up to snuff, or does the song leave you cold? Let us know in the comments!

Remember, stay tuned to our blog, twitter, and facebook for more information on Brandy and Monica – including tour dates, when they’re announced.
