BC Lions face Edmonton for the first game in their new home!

Wednesday, September 28th, 2011

CFL football has a new home in Vancouver: its old one. The fabulously revamped BC Place, traditional home of the Lions, is open for business again, and its first customers will be the Edmonton Eskimos – ready for an extra-large order of bone-crunching football, on the house.

The game, which will see the two teams face off after a 36-1 Lions victory at their last meeting, will be a chance for the Eskimos to prove themselves – and you can be sure the players are aware. The Lions, on the other hand, are eager to continue their winning streak. No matter the outcome, it’s sure to be a tense game.

Almost of equal consideration will be the experience of the brand-new stadium. Featuring more natural light, a brand-new, state-of-the-art retractable roof, vast digital screens to catch more of the action than ever before, and an incredible new sound system, the stadium is a totally new experience. The seats are even three inches wider, so don’t be to worried about hitting the concession stands.

Of course, this won’t be just another football game: the opening will be marked by a marvelous gala, featuring an incredible halftime show and internationally acclaimed recording artist Sara McLachlan to sing the national anthem.

On Sunday, the 98th Grey Cup will be played between two of the CFL’s biggest powerhouses. The Montreal Alouettes (12-6) will take on the Saskatchewan Roughriders (10-8). The game kicks off at 6pm ET at Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton.

The Alouettes, led by their quarterback and three time CFL Most Outstanding Player,  Anthony Calvillo, have maintained a dominating presence in the CFL. They have appeared in eight Grey Cups over the past 11 years. Meanwhile, the Roughriders are often referred to as “Canada’s Team,” because of their diehard fans that seem to be spread all across Canada.

Last year’s unforgettable Grey Cup was contested by these same two teams. (more…)

With the last regular season CFL games this past weekend, the 2010 Playoff teams are now set. The regular season concluded with the Montreal Alouettes and Calgary Stampeders taking decisive leads, while the BC Lions squeaked in thanks to a loss by the Edmonton Eskimos and a final game victory over the Hamilton Tiger-cats.

ShowTimeTickets.com has tickets to the 98th Grey Cup in Edmonton, but the event has been sold out for months. If the upsets, underdog victories, and action-packed performances from the regular season continues onto the post-season, the run for the Cup will be hotly contested.

The BC Lions fought tooth and nail at the end of the season to secure a playoff run. After a turnaround part way through the season, the Lions have been 7-3 down the final stretch and a late game 23-21 win they have all the momentum they need to make an interesting run in the playoffs. The first BC Lions CFL Semi Final of the year is scheduled to be played against the Roughriders this Sunday. (more…)
