At the time of their inception in the 1920s, the Globetrotters were a social and cultural game-breaker in the pre-Civil Rights era in the United States. In a period where blacks were commonly referred to as second-class citizens, the athleticism and undeniable skills of the Globetrotters transcended norms and forced a change in attitudes regarding black athletes. Basketball today is a global sport with athletes and fans of all colors and creeds. While ‘Linsanity’ is the latest phenom in the sport, perhaps some of the credit for his emergence – and that of retired player Yao Ming – can be traced back to the days when the Harlem Globetrotters burst onto the court.

Thus far through the 2011 leg of the tour’s run, reviews have highlighted the production values and immaculate performances so iconic and expected from a Cirque du Soleil production. The most memorable scenes include a rendition of Jackson’s classic “Thriller”, complete with zombies and ghouls busting their moves. Michael’s iconic dance moves are on full masterful display to lively beats of “Smooth Criminal”, “Beat it” and “Jam”. Not just a rock concert, the show also highlights Cirque’s artistic flair in their tributes to Jackson’s messages of love and social justice.

That’s set to change, though: Kleeberger will be given a clean shave by none other than famed Canadian TV presenter Rick Mercer. On October 17, Mercer is set to remove Kleeberger’s beard on his show, the Rick Mercer Report, to raise awareness of “Movember,” a campaign in which men grow moustaches in the month of November to raise money and awareness about prostate cancer. The game, which will see the two teams face off after a 36-1 Lions victory at their last meeting, will be a chance for the Eskimos to prove themselves – and you can be sure the players are aware. The show is a fusion of the best of both worlds as seen in its name, derived from the blend of “Dragon” which symbolizes the East and “Lion” for the west. It focuses on the Eastern philosophy of harmony between humans and nature, and representations of the elements become the main characters: Azala for air, Gaya for earth, Oceane for water, and Yao for fire.

Set to a variety of world music, the show includes elements such as the bamboo poles, aerial hoop, hoop diving, and more.

Originally a show under Cirque du Soleil’s Grand Chapiteau, it’s now been adapted for arena performances. Dralion will be at the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre for seven shows June 2nd-5th, 2011.

Based off of Gregory Maguire’s novel “Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West”, which in turn is based off of L Frank Baum’s classic work “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz”, Wicked centers around the frendship of Elphaba and Glinda. We all know about Glinda, the Good Witch of the North. The story tells the tale of how Elphaba becomes the Wicked Witch of the West before Dorothy’s arrival in The Wizard of Oz.

After doing it’s test run in San Francisco, Wicked officially opened October 30th, 2003 in New York’s Gershwin Theatre

Despite being initially panned by critics, the show went on to become a smash hit with the audience. It’s currently one of the two highest weekly grossing Broadway shows since it opened. The first North American tour, which debuted in 2005, played to capacity crowds at almost every single performance. The show has gone into productions worldwide, including an abridged 30 minute performance at Universal Studios Japan.

So popular has it been, that the song “Defying Gravity” was sung in season one of “Glee”. The show has also been featured in TV shows “The Simpsons”, “Brothers & Sisters”, “Ugly Betty”, and “The War at Home”.

The current North American tour debuted March 2009. Tickets are still available for many performances.

Born in Glasgow and transplanted to the States, Ferguson is best known as the current host of The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson. For his work on the show he won a Peabody Award for his interview of Archbishop Desmond Tutu and has been nominated for an Emmy.

Ferguson is also known for playing the role of Nigel Wick on The Drew Carey Show. He’s been the headliner for the Just for Laughs festival in Montreal, and has even recorded his stand up show as a special for Comedy Central entitled “A Wee Bit o’ Revolution”. Other than his biography “An American on Purpose”, Ferguson has also written a fiction novel “Between the Bridge and the River”.

You can catch Craig Ferguson for two shows at the River Rock Casino in Richmond Friday, May 27th and one show at the Boulevard Casino in Coquitlam Saturday, May 28th. He’ll also be in Toronto at Massey Hall July 29th.

Though the Caps gave it a good go on Wednesday night, the issue seems to be the lack of scoring. After being revved up for the second half, they ended up with a post strike, a header that missed, a 20-yard drive that went off the crossbar, and a shot that went high from eight yards away.

Close, but no cigar.

It seems to be unfortunate for the Whitecaps that they’ve only won 2 of their 14 games played so far, drawing half of those.

Despite that they still managed to draw a crowd of 15,500 for 20,000 seats. That’s great for the Caps, especially when Game 2 of the Western Conference Finals were at Rogers Arena the same night.

One thing the Caps will have going for them is a weekend off, while Toronto is set to play Colorado before next week’s game.

Completely insect themed, OVO takes the audience into a colourful and energetic world when a giant egg appears. While the insects investigate the curious object, a love story unfolds. Accompanied by Bazilian samba, electronic beats, and insect sounds the show is illustrated with Cirque’s beautiful acrosport, hand balancing, and slackwire.

Considered to be the biggest act of its kind presented under Cirque’s Grand Chapiteau, the show includes six flyers flying as high as 14 meters / 45 feet.

Cirque du Soleil’s OVO will be in Calgary September 7 to October 6, 2011.
