Vancouver Canucks announce 2018-2019 regular season schedule

It may be summer, but that doesn’t mean it’s too early to think about hockey! The Vancouver Canucks have been front and centre with news this week, with the announcement of their 2018-2019 regular season schedule and the 2018 NHL Entry Draft.

The Canucks will open their 49th season with a home date against the Calgary Flames on Wednesday, October 3rd. Other must-see dates on the schedule include:

  • Saturday, October 20 vs Boston
  • Monday, October 22 vs Washington
  • Saturday, October 27 vs Pittsburgh
  • Saturday, November 17 vs Montreal
  • Wednesday, March 6 vs Toronto

Canucks 2017-2018 schedule announced – home opener Oct. 7

It’s never too early to think about hockey! After finishing out of playoff contention this past season, the Canucks generated some much-needed buzz with their 5th-overall pick of Swedish centre Elias Pettersson among others at the 2017 entry draft. Pettersson is touted as a much-needed offensive prospect for a team that struggled to put pucks in the net last season.

Prior to the draft, the NHL released its 2017-2018 regular season schedule. The Canucks will begin their season with a home game versus Connor McDavid’s Edmonton Oilers on Saturday, October 7th. The NHL’s newest expansion team, the Vegas Golden Knights, will make their regular season debut at Rogers Arena on November 16th. Read More

Canucks drop the puck on a new season with young faces in tow

Canucks TicketsThe Vancouver Canucks will begin the 2015-2016 season against a familiar foe as they open the campaign tonight in Calgary. Both teams will rekindle a simmering rivalry that only got more heated with last year’s physical first-round playoff series that saw the Flames win in six games.  For the Canucks, tonight will be a prime opportunity to exact some revenge and prove that they will not be an afterthought in the Pacific Division this year.

The Canucks will start this season with 10 players who weren’t on last year’s opening-night roster. Notable names gone are Eddie Lack, Kevin Bieksa, Nick Bonino, Zack Kassian and Linden Vey. While it remains to be seen if youngsters Ben Hutton, Jake Virtanen and Jared McCann stick with the club after the first few months of the season, the Canucks are hoping the injection of youth will revitalize the team’s veterans and fan base alike. Expectations will also be high for goalies Ryan Miller and Jacob Markstrom after the club traded fan favorite Eddie Lack to the Hurricanes at the draft. The Canucks have not formally admitted that this is a rebuilding season, but expectations amongst hockey writers are limited at best.

Game on! 2015 Stanley Cup Playoffs begin today

It took 1200-odd games and the last day of the NHL regular season to set the playoff match-ups, making this year’s playoffs as intriguing as ever. With the exception of long-suffering Edmonton and Toronto markets, Canadian hockey fans across the country have special reason to be excited. With five teams in the playoffs and at least two guaranteed to make it through to the second round, the odds are favorable for a deep run from either the Canadiens, Canucks, Flames, Jets or Senators. Adding to this year’s intrigue, two past playoff heavyweights in the Los Angeles Kings and Boston Bruins will be sitting out this postseason.

Retooled, new-look Canucks begin the new season versus the Sharks

Vancouver Canucks ready for 2014-2015 seasonLooking to put their disastrous 2013/2014 season behind them, the Vancouver Canucks have been selling the notion of change to their fans. After falling just one game short of a Stanley Cup in 2011, the Canucks fell off the wagon with two consecutive first-round playoff exits in 2012 and 2013, and then missed the playoffs altogether in 2014 for the first time since 2008. The tail end of the 2013/2014 campaign saw the franchise part ways with its coaching staff, general manager, and several marquee players. Time will tell if the changes will translate to immediate success, but expectations have never been lower for the Canucks with the term “rebuild” no longer a four-letter word.

  • Goaltender Ryan Miller – After being a rock in net for a bottom-feeding Buffalo Sabres franchise for eight seasons, the Canucks signed the veteran Miller to provide stability in net. The two-time Olympian will likely be given the starting role with Eddie Lack serving as a capable backup.
  • Forward Nick Bonino – Acquired from Anaheim in the Ryan Kesler trade.
  • Defenceman Lucas Sbisa – Acquired from Anaheim in the Ryan Kesler trade.

    • It remains to be seen whether these changes will translate to a return to the playoffs, but it is clear that Canucks are responding to last year’s debacle with some fresh, up-and-coming faces.

    John Tortorella formally introduced as Canucks’ new head coach

    The rumours have been flying for weeks in Vancouver, but the Vancouver Canucks have finally named their new man behind the bench. In a press conference today, Canucks GM Mike Gillis introduced John Tortorella as the franchise’s 17th head coach. It’s a coaching swap between two franchises, with Tortorella taking over from the fired Alain Vigneault, who is taking over Torts’ old job as the head coach of the New York Rangers.

    Tortorella’s resume includes 24 years in coaching, a Stanley Cup and Jack Adams Awards as head coach of the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2004, and a silver medal as an assistant coach at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics. After 3 seasons as head coach for the New York Rangers, he was fired after the Rangers were ousted in the second round of the playoffs this year. It should be interesting days ahead for the Vancouver sports media, as Tortorella has become every bit as famous (or infamous) for his often terse relationship with reporters as he is for his brash, fiery coaching style.

    Local sports bloggers and Tweeters have wasted no time having a field day with predictions on how Torts will handle the spotlight in the hockey-mad Vancouver market. Last week, The Province’s Wyatt Arndt (also known by his Twitter handle @TheStanchion) responded to the rumours of Tortorella’s hiring by illustrating more than a few possible scenarios for the new bench boss. Love him or hate him, Torts alone should make for some interesting storylines going into next season. On the hockey side of things – you know, the side that we should probably all be concerned about – it’s a wake-up call for a Canucks team that has come close to winning it all, but has often been accused of pulling a disappearing act in the postseason in 2012 and 2013.
