The Reds Defeat Motague But It Ain't Over Yet

In the first game of the CONCACAF preliminary round yesterday, the Toronto FC defeated CD Motague 1 to 0 at BMO Field.

ChadBarrettThe game’s only goal came at the 20 minute mark when Dwayne De Rosario split the defense, leaving Walter Flores, the Motague goal k eeper, alone with TFC’s Chad Barrett who was able to put a left footed kick to the back of the net. Toronto FC was hungry for another goal, and dominated the majority of the game play, including the shots (13 – 4), but they were unsuccessful.

A number of TFC players expressed their frustration with not being able to widen the lead in this aggregated series. As De Rosario put it, “Another day we finish one or two of those chances and we go to Honduras with two or three goals up … We did get the win, the 1-0, but we know it’s very tough going to Central America and playing.”

A larger lead would have been very helpful going into Tuesday’s game at the high altitude Estadio Nacional in Tegucigalpa, played before 35,000 supportive Motague fans. Now a 2-0 win for Motague in the next game against TFC would qualify them for the group stage of the CONCACAF Championship.

The one goal lead was especially nerve racking following Saturday’s game, where TFC allowed FC Dallas to tie the game at the 77 minute mark.

Next game is Toronto FC against Chivas USA at BMO Field on August 7th. Make sure you do not miss a single game by getting your Toronto FC tickets at ShowTimeTickets.com, we are never sold out!
