The 2010 World Series run has been called by many the Battle of the Aces. With the San Francisco Giants defeating the Philadelphia Phillies over the weekend we saw one Cy Young winner, Roy Halladay, defeated by another two time winner, Tim Lincecum. Now, who better to take the mound against Tim “the Freak” Lincecum in Game 1 of the World Series than another Cy Young Winning, Cliff Lee for the Texas Rangers.
The 2008 Cy Young winner Cliff Lee, has made a name for himself as one of the MLB’s best all time postseason pitchers with a 7-0 record and a 1.26 ERA in eight career post season starts. He has allowed just 2 earned runs over 24 innings this postseason.
Meanwhile, 26 year old Tim Lincecum has earned the respect of many MLB fans with the 98 mph fast ball he is able to generate with his slight 170 lb build as well as his deadly changeup, earning him two Cy Young awards.
Furthermore, with all the rich pitching talent present in this World Series, it is only fitting that behind the mound, as the Rangers President, is Nolan Ryan the all-time strikeout leader.
As evidence to the Battle of the Aces that this World Series has turned into, the pitching staff of both teams pitched more strikeouts in the first two rounds of the playoffs than innings pitched. Remarkably, the Rangers have earned 107 strikeouts in 98 innings and the Giants 102 in 91 innings played.
As MLB reporter John Schlegel put it “the Year of the Pitcher will continue from the first pitch, and something as beautiful as the Golden Gate and as huge as Texas will begin to unfold.”
