Green Day's album American Idiot has been both a huge critical and commercial success. It won the 2005 Grammy Award for "Best Rock Album" as well as sweeping the MTV Video Music Awards in 2005, winning seven out of eight nominations: "Video of the Year", "Best Rock Video", "Best Group Video", "Best Direction", "Best Editing", "Best Cinematography" and the "Viewer's Choice Award" for the single "American Idiot". In addition to their American Music Award for "Favorite Album" for American Idiot, Green Day won the 2006 Grammy Award for Record of the Year for "Boulevard of Broken Dreams".

Green Day is credited, along with The Offspring and Rancid, with popularizing and reviving mainstream interest in punk rock in the United States during the mid 1990s and carrying it through to the present. Their success has influenced other prominent pop punk bands like Sum 41, My Chemical Romance and Blink-182.
