Boston Red Sox Continued
The Boston Red Sox were founded in 1893 as a Toledo Ohio franchise in the minor Western League. They moved to Boston when the league became the American League in 1900. The Red Sox have had multiple names throughout their franchise history. They were called the Boston Americans in 1901, Boston Somersets in 1902 and Boston Pilgrims from 1903 to 1906.
1903 - The Boston Red Sox win the first ever World Series. Boston Red Sox ticket sales soar.
1919 - Red Sox owner Harry Frazee sells baseball legend Babe Ruth to the Yankees. Legend has it he did so to finance his Broadway play No, No Nanette. In truth, Ruth was actually sold along with a number of other players to pay off debts incurred by previous Broadway failures.
1930 - Tom Yawkey buys the Red Sox and considerably boosts the teams yearly budget.
1939, The Red Sox purchase legendary hitter Ted Willams from the Pacific Coast League. He goes on to hit .400 in the 1941 season setting an MLB record.
1946 - Ted Williams takes the team to the World Series but they lose to the St. Louis Cardinals.
1961 - Carl "The Yaz" Yastrzemski wins the AL Triple Crown. The Red Sox again lost the Series to the St. Louis.
1975 - The Red Sox win the AL pennant.
1976 - Owner Tom Yawkey passes away. His wife Jean takes control of the team. She runs the team until her death in 1992.
1994 - Longtime Red Sox General Manager Lou Gorman is replaced by Dan Duquette.
1995 - The Red Sox win the AL east, 7 games ahead of the Yankees. They are later beaten in a 3-0 World Series sweep by the Cleveland Indians.
1998 - The Red Sox aquire star pitcher Predro Martinez. He goes on to have several spectacular seasons boosting Boston Red Sox ticket sales considerably.
2002 - The Red Sox are sold to a group of investors headed up by John Henry and Tom Werner. During the off season, the new ownership hire Yale graduate Theo Epstein as the new GM. His is the youngest GM in MLB history at the age of 28.
2003 - The Red Sox set a new MLB record by scoring 10 runs against the Marlins in the first inning.
2004 - The Red Sox
Red Sox
win the 100th World Series, completing a four-game sweep of the St. Louis Cardinals with a 3-0 victory on the strength of seven innings of three-hit pitching by Derek Lowe. Playing 1,042 miles from Fenway Park, the Sox won it all for the first time in 86 long and frustrating seasons.
