New York Mets Continued

1959 - The New York Metropolitan Baseball Team forms as a charter team of the Continental League.

1960 - The League disbands on condition that four of its franchises are accepted into the National and American Leagues.

1961 - The Metropolitan's are formally accepted into the NL and shorten their name to the "Mets". The Mets invest 1.8 million and draft 22 players. Shea Stadium begins construction.

1962 - The Mets play their first game against the Cardinals and lose 11-4. Their first victory is a 9-1 victory in Pittsburgh two weeks later.

1964 - Shea Stadium opens.

1966 - After signing the legendary Tom Seaver, the Mets become a powerhouse team almost overnight.

1969 - The Mets win the NL East Chanpionship for the first tme in franchise history. They also become the first team in NL history to compete in the World Series and go on to win the Championship against Baltimore.

1972 - The Mets trade Charlie Williams to the Giants in exchange for Willie Mays.

1973 - The Mets win the NL East against the Cubs. They go on to take the Pennant after beating Cincinnati.

1982 - The Mets net Dwight Gooden with the fifth pick of the Draft.

1983 - June 15, 1983 - The Mets trade Neil Allen and Rick Ownby to the Cardinals for Keith Hernandez.

1986 - Mets defeat the Boston Red Sox for their second World Series title.

1988 - September 22, 1988 - The Mets clinch the National League East after beating the Phillies at Shea Stadium.

1998 - May 22, 1998 - Ed Yarnell and Geoff Getz are traded to the Marlins for Catcher Mike Piazza.

2000 - October 8, 2000 - The Mets win their fourth National League Pennant after beating the St. Louis Cardinals.
