After a series of unsuccessful attempts at cracking the music business in the late '80s, the group recruited Jerry Harrison of the Talking Heads to produce Mental Jewelry, an album based on the writings of J. Krishnamurti, an Indian philosopher. Live established a following and returned with the hugely popular album Throwing Copper, again produced by Harrison, which was pushed by the success of singles "Selling the Drama", "I Alone" and "Lightning Crashes".
In 2004, Live released a greatest hits album that included alternate takes, a previously unreleased song from the Throwing Copper sessions and a cover of Johnny Cash's "I Walk the Line". Their new album, released early 2006, is titled Songs from Black Mountain.
