Ministry is an American industrial metal band of the 1980s, 1990s and 2000s. Alain Jourgensen was born 1959 in Havana, Cuba. He began Ministry in Chicago, IL, in 1981. The original line-up consisted mainly of Jourgensen (singing and playing keyboards) and Stephen George (drumming). Ministry's original sound was essentially synth-pop that was more melodic than the music for which Jourgensen is now known.

Ministry's LP, Houses of the Mole, released in 2004, contained the most explicitly political lyrics Jourgensen authored. Songs on the album were in Ministry's classic punky electro-metallic sound only played messier, more crudely and more freely than ever before.
Jourgensen has stated in several interviews that Ministry's music is often better when a Republican occupies the White House. The use of the word mole in the title is quite significant; mole is a fine Mexican sauce made from chocolate. Jourgensen chose the word because the delicacy is nearly black and resembles oil, a mainstay of the economy in Texas, George W. Bush's home state.
In the fall of 2005, Jourgensen started his own label, "Thirteenth Planet".
